After an intensive judging process, the winner of the Nando’s Hot Young Designer (HYD) Talent Search Competition has finally been revealed. Katlego Tshuma has been named as 2020’s winner. For his entry, he looked to the traditional African mat for the inspiration behind his winning Sangu Bench. Sangu is the Xitsonga word for a traditional African grass mat.
The multi-award-winning designer just became the first South African designer whose work now forms part of the permanent collection of one of the world’s most prominent design museums.
“They took on the challenge to design a bench with social distancing in mind, and they won.” The Nando’s Hot Young Designer Talent Search (HYD), now in its third iteration, is all about unearthing fresh talent and launching, as well as supporting the careers of local designers. For the 2020 edition of HYD, young designers were asked to create a unique bench that responds sensitively to seating needs in a time of social distancing.
Khosi Leteba’s Lesotho inspired Bodulo collection impressed the judges at Clout Industry Days, and now, in collaboration with one of South Africa’s leading design studios, it has been brought to life, and it is ready for the world stage.
