Clout/SA at Cape Town Furniture Week

The Clout/SA showcase for Cape Town Furniture Week featured a host of new SA design pieces, including screen prototypes by three of our Nandos HYD finalists . The showcase formed part of The New Design Hub at Church House, 1 Queen Victoria St and was open to viewing by the public from 19 - 22 February 2025.

Clout/SA creative director Tracy Lynch curated the exhibition which featured displays in two rooms at Church House. This room featured Nando’s HYD finalist Simphiwe Mlambo’s HYD entry, the Ihawu screen, inspired by the ‘ihawu’ or shield. The room also showcased the Pedi rug by Siyanda Mbele of Pinda Design as well as a new woven daybed by John Vogel and cork side tables by Wiid Design. In the corner is the prototype of the Peekaboo Screen by Nando’s HYD finalist Walter Train.

Nando’s HYD 2024 finalist Simphiwe Mlambo’s HYD entry, the Ihawu screen was brought to life and viewed for the first time at Cape Town Furniture Week, shown here with the designer.

Hot Young Designer finalist Mpumelelo Nyuswa of Good Better Best Studios standing with the Qhakaza screen he designed for HYD. The Qhakaza screen was inspired by his isiZulu heritage, particularly the shapes of traditional isiQhaza earrings. In the foreground are new woven outdoor chairs by John Vogel and rug by Pinda Design.

Our culture has always been synonymous with curved and circular shapes. IsiQhaza, initially worn by young men and women after a ceremony during their adolescence period which signified growth and a sense of pride, and later through urbanisation, was a means of translating one’s artistic expression and a symbol of style and adornment.

I have always been fascinated with isiQhaza and used it as a starting point, it always leads me to learn more and dive deeper into my culture, heritage and history.
